The Sleep Cycle Explained: What Happens Every 90 Minutes
Sleep comes in stages, not one flat state
Each night you cycle through four sleep stages roughly every 90 minutes: three stages of non-REM sleep (N1, N2, N3) followed by REM sleep. A typical night includes four to six of these cycles, and the balance between stages shifts as the night goes on.
N1 and N2: falling asleep and light sleep
N1 is the brief transition from wakefulness — a few minutes where you can be woken easily and might not even realize you'd drifted off. N2 follows and makes up the largest share of total sleep time. Heart rate and body temperature drop, and brain activity slows, punctuated by short bursts called sleep spindles that are thought to play a role in memory consolidation.
N3: deep sleep, the physically restorative stage
N3 (sometimes called slow-wave sleep) is where the body does most of its physical repair — tissue growth, muscle recovery, and immune system reinforcement. It's concentrated in the first half of the night, which is part of why the first few hours of sleep matter so much and why being woken from N3 tends to leave you groggy.
REM: the stage most tied to dreaming
REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is when the most vivid dreaming happens, including the majority of lucid dreams. The brain is highly active — close to waking levels — while the body is essentially paralyzed (a mechanism that normally stops you from acting out dreams). REM periods get longer as the night progresses, which is why dream recall tends to be strongest for whatever you were dreaming right before your alarm.
Why this matters for a dream journal
Because REM periods lengthen toward morning, waking naturally (or catching the tail end of a cycle) makes it far more likely you'll remember something worth writing down. This is also why techniques like Wake-Back-to-Bed — waking briefly a few hours before your normal wake time, then going back to sleep — are commonly used to increase both dream recall and the odds of a lucid dream, since they drop you back into REM-heavy sleep while your mind is still alert enough to notice.
